about

At the dark centre of the album, this piece is inspired by the
experiences of the Allied PoW’s, forced to live and work in
terrible conditions on the Burma Railway and elsewhere in
South East Asia.

--Story--
With news of Arthur’s capture as a Japanese Prisoner of War,
Mirla’s initial relief is turned upside-down, as her fears grow for
Arthur’s survival and safe return.
A shakuhachi flute sound melds to the brutal clanging of bridge
building. The camp death toll rises like steam, an unholy
emanation from the fetid jungle camps of the Burma Death
Railway.

– Conversation Notes –
I wanted the listener propelled into the nightmare of PoW life on
Death Railway. I incorporate Japanese instrumentation, to the
driving, percussive piano, the work-like rhythm, the un-holy
metallic sounds, searing strings and operatic male vocals.
The piano locks into the monotonous grind of PoW life; a
seemingly endless struggle survive, when there’s nothing but
rotten rice and forced labour and mateship. Arthur finds
nourishment and strength in his humour, poems, drawings and
diary; in Mirla.
