about

A cross-genre composition for piano, strings, with spokenword
and electronic soundscapes.

Written to express the romance inherent in letter writing
between sweethearts, but also acknowledging the challenges
of maintaining a connection during wartime.

– Story--
In those hardest of times, the blackest of moments, Mirla returns
from work to find a bundle of her letters: all unopened, all
‘Returned to sender’, and worst of all, there is the letter in which
she declares her love for Arthur. It's a devastating blow, upon an
open wound.

– Conversation Notes –
Mostly composed and produced in Bali, during a 3 month
lockdown, I was creating ideas on a hired electronic piano and
producing the atmospheric layers on my laptop.

Each day I’d read the archive of letters between Mirla and
Arthur and look at the photos, at Arthur’s drawings and poetry.
This piece was to intended to celebrate their letter writing,
which was so innocent and adorable. It’s about establishing a
romantic, yet melancholic mood, along with the album’s dreamlike
and cinematic qualities.

The prologue uses spoken-word phrases from Mirla’s letters to
Arthur and my husband’s original poetry to create a more
exaggerated and dream-like expression of their correspondence
and romance.
